Flat battery?
The battery is one of the most important items under the bonnet. A faulty or old battery can cause problems starting the engine, which could leave you and your family stranded at the roadside. There are three important checks you should carry out, especially if you’re having problems.
- 1Low fluid levelIf your battery has removable covers, you can inspect the level of electrolyte fluid inside the cells. You will see metal plates inside (side on from the top). The fluid should be higher than the plates. Top up with distilled (de-ionised) water.
- 2Poor charging from the alternatorStart your car and put all your lights on full beam. When you rev the engine you should just be able to see the lights get brighter, then dimmer when you stop revving. If the car stalls when you put the lights on, the problem is probably the alternator.
- 3Incorrect battery fittedYour battery needs the correct amp/hour rating for your vehicle, or your engine may stall or have trouble starting. Our staff can advise on the correct battery for your car.
